How to Apply for the NIE in Spain (2025)

Eligibility

EU Citizens: Required if staying in Spain for more than three months.
Non-EU Citizens: Required for stays exceeding six months or for specific activities like employment or studies.

Step 1: Book an Appointment (Cita Previa)

Online Booking: Schedule your appointment through the official Spanish government website. Book a “cita previa” (appointment) at the local Oficina de Extranjeros (Immigration Office) or Policía Nacional. Availability may vary by region; in cities like Madrid or Barcelona, appointments can be booked several weeks in advance.

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

Completed Application Form: EX-15 (available online).
Valid Passport: Original and a photocopy.
Proof of Purpose: Employment contract, internship offer, or university enrollment letter.
Proof of Address: Rental contract or registration at the local town hall (empadronamiento).
Passport-sized Photos: Typically two.
Payment Receipt: Form 790, Code 12 (approximately €12), paid at a bank.
Visa Documents: For non-EU citizens, a valid visa and entry stamp are required.

Step 3: Attend Your Appointment

In-Person Submission: Present all documents at the designated police station or foreigners’ office.
Processing Time: The NIE is usually issued within three weeks, but this can vary.

SSN

What Is the Spanish Social Security Number (SSN)?

The Social Security Number (Número de Afiliación a la Seguridad Social) is essential for accessing Spain’s public healthcare system and for employment-related benefits.

Who Needs the SSN?

Employees: Employers typically apply on your behalf.
Self-Employed (Autónomos): Must apply individually.
Interns: If the internship is paid, an SSN is required.

Benefits of the SSN

Access to public healthcare.
Eligibility for unemployment benefits, pensions, and disability support.
Required for employment contracts and tax purposes.

Note: The NIE is valid indefinitely but must be renewed if linked to a residence permit.

How to Apply for the SSN in Spain (2025)

Eligibility

EU Citizens: Must be employed, self-employed, or have sufficient means to support themselves.
Non-EU Citizens: Must have a valid work or residence permit.

Step 1: Obtain an NIE

Prerequisite: An NIE is mandatory before applying for an SSN.

Step 2: Complete the Application Form

Form: TA.1, available online or at Social Security offices.

Step 3: Submit Your Application

Online Application: If you have a digital certificate or Cl@ve PIN, you can apply through the official Social Security website.
In-Person Application: Visit your nearest Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social office. It’s advisable to book an appointment in advance .

Step 4: Receive Your SSN

Processing Time: Typically, you’ll receive your SSN within 1 to 3 weeks.
Delivery: The number is usually sent via email or postal mail .
